You can reach Wingiskus Lake (and the Manigotagan River system) by portaging from the Bird River just upstream from Snowshoe Lake. Refer to the map.

Portage #1: To Alga Lake

The landing is just upstream from where a tiny creek enters the Bird. The spot used to have a big old tree on it that has now left little mark of its former existence. The landing is at a level grassy area. The trail is about 150 meters long. An easy walk except for bushes that encroach here and there. The Alga Lake launch point is troublesome. The shoreline is swampy. Water levels will determine how easy it is to reach open water.

Portage #2: To Wingiskus Lake

The Alga Lake landing is a problem. The best place to land is at a low rock at the northwest end of the lake. The trail is 1.5 kilometres long and a relatively easy walk through mostly flat terrain.

Portage #3: To Bee Lake

The portage begins in the northern bay of Wingiskus. It is an easy 150 metre walk. To reach Eden Lake, you have to canoe upstream on the Manigotagan River for a kilometre or so. The river is shallow with possible beaver dams. Eden Lake is well worth a visit. It is an aptly named lake.

Portage #4: To Kangaroo Lake

You can travel back to the Bird River system (coming out in Midway Lake just before the narrows into Eagle Lake). See Midway Lake to Eden Lake for details.
