The portage between Siderock Lake and Obukowin Lake is sometimes referred to as the "three mothers" because of its length and the boggy nature of parts of it. It consists of three sections with two ponds. Refer to the map.
Portage #1: Obukowin to pond 1
The trail is 900 metres long and reasonable walking.
Portage #2: Pond 1 to pond 2
The trail is 1100 metres long. As you get near pond 2, the trail forks. Do not take the left path (from the perspective of coming from pond 1). The left path takes you to the winter trail and walking on floating bog. The right path is on higher ground. There are two inukshuks at the high point overlooking pond 2. The pond 2 landing is on a small rockshelf.
Portage #3: Pond 2 to Siderock
The trail is 3 kilometres long. There are two problem areas. The first one is finding the trailhead in pond 2. You have to push through floating bog to reach it at the west edge of the end of the southernmost bay of pond 2. Sometimes there is a small channel from the open waters of pond 2 to the trailhead. Between the trailhead and the creek crossing there are a number of boggy areas along the trail. The second problem area is the creek crossing. In high water years, you may have to canoe across. Do not despair at the crossing. The trail continues on the other side of the creek. Once there, the walking is much better over higher ground.
Note:
Before the Wallace Lake forest fire of 1987, the trail from pond 2 to Siderock was entirely on the west side of the creek. It was rerouted after the fire.
