The Black River, downstream from the Rabbit River canoe put in (refer to map 1), is an interesting destination that takes a day's travel to reach. You begin on the Rabbit River parking lot. A couple of kilometres later the Rabbit River joins the Black River. There are 9 obstacles (falls and/or rapids) between the put in and Black River Lake (refer to map 2). Both Black River Lake and smaller lake (the lake with the big island) upstream from it have good camping spots and good walleye fishing.
You can do a short side trip to Cigar Lake from Black River Lake. You can also continue down the Black River. Black River Lake ends in a waterfall. The portage trail is only 40 metres long but it is an adventure in cliff scrambling. The trail begins at an inlet to the left (south side) of the waterfall. There is another waterfall/rapid a couple of kilometres downstream bordered by canyon-like heights.
Whether you portage, waterwalk/line, or run a rapid greatly depends on water levels. In high water, some rapids are runnable. In low water, they are not runnable but can be lined/walked.
Obstacles #1 and #2: Just before the small pond Lake
#2 must be portaged (about 50 metres). The trail is on the north side of the river.
Obstacles #3 and #4: Just after the small pond Lake
These are runnable/lineable.
Obstacle #5:
Depends.
Obstacle #6:
A very short fall over a rock shelf. Portage (10 metres) or line it. The trail is on the north side of the river.
Obstacle #7:
Must portage. The trail is about 400 metres long but well-established. It is on the north side of the river. The only confusing part of the trail is the downstream end. There, the trail parallels the shore (in a swampy area) as it cuts back to the river.
Obstacle #8: Just before the smaller lake with the big island
Portage (50 metres) on the north side of the river.
Obstacle #9: Just before Black River Lake
Portage (40 metres) on the south side of the river. Not a good trail.
