Use of Maple and Mathematica in PHYS-3202

Maple

The University of Winnipeg has a site license for Maple 2020, which you can use over the internet via Citrix Receiver software. You can use Maple either directly in your web browser or through a Citrix Receiver app on your computer (the advantage of the second option is that you can save files directly on your own computer rather than uploading and downloading). Instructions for both of these options are below. When you open a new Maple file, please choose the "Worksheet" option rather than the "Document" option (see below).

Important submission instructions: To submit your work, please convert your Maple file to PDF and either combine it with your main assignment PDF or submit it as a separate file named FirstInitialLastName_hwN_qN.pdf (for example, I might submit AFrey_hw5_q4.pdf). To create a PDF of your Maple file, use the "Export As..." command under the file menu (you may be able to "Print to File" under the "Print..." option). Please note that this command works sometimes but sometimes crashes Maple. If you cannot do this, please submit your Maple file (named as above with extension ".mw"). To be sure I can read your Maple file and convert it to PDF, please use a Maple "worksheet" rather than a "document" when you open a new file.

To use Maple in your web browser

  1. Log on to UWinnipeg MyApps using your WebAdvisor username and password
  2. Click the text link for "Use light version" (under the large "detect receiver" box). It should automatically skip this step the next time you log in.
  3. Click the Maple box to open a new tab with Maple 2020
  4. You may get an error message about user profiles. Ignore it.
  5. There is a small keyboard toggle in the top right. Switch it from "Canadian French" to "US." You may need to do this every time you log in. If you don't, things like ^ for exponents won't work.
  6. You will need to save your work on the UWinnipeg server. I suggest you use your Network Share drive (same one as available in the computer lab), which you can find under "This PC." If you save a file in a different place on the server, it may be deleted the next time you log in.
  7. There is a small semicircle with two lines in it at the top center of your browser tab. If you pull it down, it has several options, including uploading and downloading files.

To use Maple in the Citrix App on your computer
The first time you log in, you need to install the Citrix app. On a Windows computer or Mac, follow these instructions (on Linux, please ask me):

  1. Log on to UWinnipeg MyApps using your WebAdvisor username and password
  2. Click the large "Detect Receiver" box and follow these instructions precisely to install the Citrix app
  3. You may have a pop-up warning about software licenses. This concerns the University, and you can ignore it

The next time you want to use Maple:

  1. Log on to UWinnipeg MyApps using your WebAdvisor username and password
  2. Select the Maple app, which will load, then open on your computer
  3. You may get an error message about user profiles. Ignore it.
  4. There should be a toggle on the upper right of your screen. If necessary, switch it from "Canadian French" to "US." You might have to do this every time you log in. If you don't, things like ^ for exponents won't work.
  5. You should be able to open and save files directly on your computer under "This PC."

In either case, you can log out through the pull-down menu at the top-right of the tab with your list of apps.

Mathematica

Wolfram software allows anyone to access Mathematica Online through a free account (you can pay if you want more processing time/power). You can access Mathematica through your web browser and upload/download files.

Important submission instructions: To submit your work, please convert your Mathematica file to PDF and either combine it with your main assignment PDF or submit it as a separate file named FirstInitialLastName_hwN_qN.pdf (for example, I might submit AFrey_hw5_q4.pdf). To create a PDF of your Mathematica file, use "Print to PDF" from the File menu; see below.

Sample Mathematica Notebook you can try things out in.

  1. Log on to Wolfram Cloud using your Wolfram ID. If you don't have a Wolfram ID, click the "Sign Up" button.
  2. You can upload/download or open files from your "My Files" page.
  3. If you click on "New Notebook" or one of the notebook icons, it will open a tab with Mathematica Online.
  4. Whenever you make changes, it automatically saves your work. The filename is located on the top left; you can change the name by clicking on it.
  5. You can download your file or "Print to PDF" under the "File" menu at the top right. "Print to PDF" will either open a PDF in a new tab (where you can download as normal) or give you a download prompt, depending on your browser settings.
