Watering Uncle Gordo's plants
“Barlo, I have a small chore for you to do.” said his mom. “Yes mom, I hear you. What is it?” replied Barlo. “I want you to go to Uncle Gordo’s house and water his plants. He is away on vacation.” “Don’t I need a key to get into his house?” asked Barlo. “No, Uncle Gordo uses locks that only open when the correct numbers are entered. He has four locks on his door.” “What are the correct numbers?” asked Barlo. “I don’t know, but Uncle Gordo gave me a piece of paper that helps you figure out what numbers to enter on the locks. Take it with you.”
Barlo took the paper without looking at it and ran to Uncle Gordo’s house. He was in a hurry because he wanted to play soccer with his friends as soon as his chore was done. Sure enough, there were four locks on the door. Barlo looked at the first one.
Barlo groaned, “I’ll never get to play soccer. I need to enter two numbers but they could be anything.” Then he remembered the piece of paper. He took it out of his pocket and stared at it.
At long last, Barlo saw what to do. He looked at the first lock again. He entered the two missing numbers and the lock snapped open.
Barlo looked at the second lock. He entered the three missing numbers and the lock snapped open.
Barlo looked at the third lock. He entered the three missing numbers and the lock snapped open.
Barlo looked at the fourth lock. He entered the three missing numbers and the lock snapped open.
