A rescue in Black Mountain #1
The good wizard Thunderbard was swimming in his duck pond when old king Thawmuch called to him. Thunderbard knew something was amiss. He asked the king, "How can I help you?"
The king said, with tears in his eyes, "Will you rescue my poor son from the clutches of the bad wizard Vilemore? My son is held prisoner in a dungeon buried deep in Black Mountain. A long tunnel leads to the dungeon. There are two locked doors in the tunnel. Each door has a combination lock. Luckily, a locksmith gave me clues for those combinations." Thunderbard answered calmly, "I will rescue your son. Show me the clues."
Thawmuch gave Thunderbard two pieces of paper on which were drawn strange symbols with the last set of symbols missing. Thunderbard took the papers and hurried to Black Mountain.
He found the first door. It had a slot in it and there was a ledge in the wall close by. Different symbols made of baked clay were piled on the ledge. Thunderbard studied the symbols drawn on the first piece of paper.
He picked up the first nine pairs of symbols shown on the paper and dropped them in turn into the slot. But what was the tenth pair of symbols that he had to drop? He started to think.
