PsycLIT ® on SilverPlatter is a computerized CD-ROM database produced
by PsycINFO, a department of the American Psychological Association
(APA). It provides access to the international journal, book-chapter,
and book literature in psychology and related disciplines such as
education, business, medicine, law, and social work.

The PsycLIT database is stored on two compact discs. Disc 1 includes
references added to the Journal Articles database from 1974 through
1986. Disc 2 contains two separate databases, each of which is updated
quarterly and spans 1987 to the present: the Journal Articles database
and the Book Chapters and Books database.

Each record contains many different types of information.
Journal-article records include a bibliographic citation, an abstract,
and indexing. Book-chapter and book records contain a bibliographic
citation, content summary, and indexing. In addition, book records
include the book's table of contents.

PsycLIT records cover journal and book literature published around the
world. Approximately 11 percent of the records for journal articles
refer to source documents written in a language other than English.
All of the book-chapter and book records refer to English- language
   source documents.

AB ABSTRACT: Hypothesizing that children become attentionally
engaged during play in a manner similar to that found during
television viewing, the temporal structure of free toy play by 5-
yr-olds was examined. In Study 1, 10 Ss were videotaped during 3
hrs of play. Play episode lengths were lognormally distributed for
each S with no autocorrelation. Hazard functions for each S were
similar, increasing to a point between 3 and 14 sec after play was
initiated, then decreasing thereafter. Study 2 tested the
hypothesis that these hazard functions reflect attentional
engagement by presenting audiovisual distractors during free toy
play by 30 5-yr-olds. Probability of distraction increased to a
peak at about 12 sec after a play episode began and steadily
declined thereafter. Reaction times (RTs) of headturns toward the
distractor inversely paralleled the probability of distraction.

PsycLIT Subject Searching

Step 1: Select the appropriate PsycLIT database.

   Three choices are available:

     * PsycLIT Journal Articles (1/74-12/86)
     * PsycLIT Journal Articles (1/87-present)
     * PsycLIT Book Chapters and Books (1/87-present)

Use the up/down-arrow keys to highlight the desired database. Then
press the spacebar. A small check-mark will appear to the left of the
database name. Press Enter to load the database and begin searching.

Step 2: Compose a narrative statement of your search topic or
   question.

"How has hypnosis been used for control or cessation of cigarette
   smoking?"

Step 3: Identify the separate concepts in the question.

Usually, two or three concepts are needed to narrow your topic to an
   acceptable number of retrieved records:

1. hypnosis 2. cigarette smoking

Step 4: Find descriptors to represent each concept.

   To use the on-disc Thesaurus:

     * Press F9
     * Type a word or word root that best represents Concept #1:

     _________________________________________________________________

THESAURUS term to look up: hypno

     _________________________________________________________________

     * Press Enter
     * PsycLIT will display the alphabetized List of Permuted Terms
screen. Place the cursor on the desired descriptor.
     * Press T (Term Details) to see more information about this
       descriptor.

Step 5: Choose the descriptors that best represent Concept #1.

You may do this in one of two ways:

     * Select descriptors one by one. At the Permuted Terms or Term
Details screens, you may move the cursor to the desired
descriptor(s) and press S (Select Term) each time. If you want to
see more information about any descriptor, place your cursor on it
and press T (Term Details). Press B (Back) to return to any
       previous screen.

     * Explode the main descriptor. At the Term Details screen, move the
cursor to the main descriptor at the top of the screen, to the
right of the phrase TERM DETAILS FOR. If this descriptor has
narrower descriptors, they will be listed to the right of NARROWER
TERMS. If the main descriptor has narrower descriptors, the menu
bar at the bottom of the screen will give you the option to
Explode. Press E (Explode) to select the main descriptor plus all
       of its narrower descriptors.

It is important to select all applicable narrower descriptors, because
PsycLIT records are indexed with the most specific descriptors
   possible.

   Step 6: Find.

When you have Selected or Exploded all of the descriptors that
represent Concept #1, press F (Find) to retrieve records containing
   these descriptors.

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for Concept #2, cigarette smoking. You must use
the on-disc Thesaurus separately for each concept in your search.

The FIND screen now shows numbered sets containing records indexed
with the descriptors you have chosen:

     _________________________________________________________________

No. Records Request

1: 666 explode HYPNOTHERAPY in DE
2: 604 explode HYPNOSIS in DE
3: 1189 #1 or #2
4: 1247 TOBACCO-SMOKING in DE
5: 402 SMOKING-CESSATION in DE
6: 1369 #4 or #5

     _________________________________________________________________

    Step 7: Combine Sets.

AND, OR, and NOT can be used to combine the appropriate sets to match
   your narrative search statement:

     * Use OR to combine the sets that express basically the same
concept. OR broadens your search so that you will retrieve records
containing at least one of the descriptors in the ORed sets. When
you select descriptors from the on-disc Thesaurus, PsycLIT
automatically inserts the OR. If you are typing descriptors or
keywords directly from the FIND prompt, you will need to add the
       ORs yourself.
     * Use AND to combine groups of concepts if you want each concept to
be in every record you retrieve.

For this example, our narrative search statement requires that each
article retrieved must contain both the hypnosis concept and the
cigarette-smoking concept. To accomplish this, type #6 AND #3 at the
FIND prompt. Each article in the resulting set (#7) will contain a
hypnosis descriptor and a cigarette-smoking descriptor. Be sure to use
the "#" sign when referring to set numbers.

     _________________________________________________________________

No. Records Request

7: 23 #3 and #6

     _________________________________________________________________

Step 8: Press F4 (Show) to view the records from your final set.

To see records in any set other than the final one, you will need to
type-in the set number. This will move your desired set to the final
   line on the search screen.

Browse through the set by using the up/down arrow keys or the
   page-up/page-down keys.

You can view the fields PsycLIT automatically gives you for each
record, or you can customize the record display by pressing O
(Options). Once inside the Show Options box, enter the desired
two-letter field labels at the Fields to Display prompt.

Sample "Show Options" configuration (Journal Articles database ):

Linking Features in the PsycLIT Book Chapters and Books Database

In the Book Chapters and Books database, edited-book records and their
associated chapter records are linked for easy browsing. You can move
between a chapter and its "parent-book" record, or between consecutive
chapter records from the same book. You must first press F4 (Show) to
   use the linking features.

   The linking elements are {{SEE CHAPTER}}, {{SEE BOOK}}, {{SEE PREVIOUS
CHAPTER}}, and {{SEE NEXT CHAPTER}}. To link records, use the arrow
keys to position the cursor on the desired linking element, then press
   L (Link).

After you have viewed as many linked records as you wish, return to
the record you started with by pressing B to move Back one screen at a
time, or press Esc to go directly back to the first record.

   Step 9: Mark Desired Records.

As you view your retrieval, you can mark the relevant records for
later printing or downloading. Marking records will save you paper and
time, since you will not have to separate and discard any unwanted
   records later.

Place the cursor anywhere within a desired record and press M (Mark).
Asterisks will appear at the left side of the record. You may mark as
   many records as you wish.

If you want all the records in your set, marking is unnecessary.

To include linked records for printing or downloading, you must mark
   them.

   Step 10: Print or Download.

Once you have finished viewing and marking records, press P (Print) or
D (Download). An options box indicating your choices will appear. You
can customize the Print or Download options by pressing C (Change
Options). Select the fields you desire by entering their two-letter
labels at the Fields to Print or Fields to Download prompt. For the
Journal Articles database, a good choice is to select the citation and
abstract (CITN,AB). For the Book Chapters and Books database, you may
wish to select the citation and content representation (CITN,CR).

You can specify a range of records to print or download, or you can
print or download only the records you have marked. It is a good idea
to print your search strategy so you can more easily update the search
later if you wish. You may sort your printed or downloaded records by
any field, in ascending or descending order. The download options box
also lets you set the file name and destination drive.

Subject Searching When There is No Appropriate Thesaurus Descriptor

   Step 1

   Narrative search statement:

"What research has been done on corporate cultures?"

   Step 2

Our next step is to consult the Thesaurus to find appropriate
descriptors for our search concept, corporate culture. However, we
find that no existing descriptor covers this concept. We must
therefore search this phrase in the "free-text" fields. Type the
   phrase at the FIND prompt.

For the Journal Articles database, we recommend free-text searching in
the title (TI), the key phrase (KP) and, if desired, the abstract
   (AB).

For the Book Chapters and Books database, search free-text in the
title (TI), content representation (CR) and, if desired, in the table
   of contents (TC).

The example below is for Book Chapters and Books:

     _________________________________________________________________

FIND: corporate culture? in ti or corporate culture?
in cr

     _________________________________________________________________

The search history screen will look like this:

1: 179 CORPORATE
2: >1324 CULTURE?
3: 179 CORPORATE
4: >1324 CULTURE?
5: 9 ((CORPORATE CULTURE?) in TI) or ((CORPORATE
                 CULTURE?) in CR)

     _________________________________________________________________

When searching free-text from the FIND prompt,

     * Use the unlimited truncation symbol (*) to get any variation of a
       word root or phrase:

     _________________________________________________________________

     _________________________________________________________________

     * Use the wildcard symbol (?) to allow one character or no character
to occur in its position. You can use as many question marks as
needed to stand for additional characters. Used at the end of a
word, the wildcard will retrieve a plural __s ending, for example.
In the middle of a word, the wildcard will retrieve both American
       and British spellings:

     _________________________________________________________________

FIND: diet?

FIND: colo?ration in ti or colo?ration in cr

     _________________________________________________________________

     * For highly relevant retrieval in the Journal Articles database,
search simultaneously in the title (TI) and key phrase (KP) fields
(e.g., SMILING IN TI OR SMILING IN KP).
     * For highly relevant retrieval in the Book Chapters and Books
database, search simultaneously in the title (TI) and content
representation (CR) fields (e.g., CREATIV* IN TI OR CREATIV* IN
       CR).

Classification Code Searching

Another method for retrieving subject information in PsycLIT is by
using content classification codes. These numerical codes represent
the broad conceptual thrust of an article, chapter, or book. They can
be used in conjunction with descriptors or free-text phrases typed at
   the FIND prompt.

For information on content classification code searching, press F3
(Guide), then press F (Fields). Use the page-down key to move ahead to
   the CC field label instructions.

To view the complete list of content classification codes, press F3
(Guide), then press T (Terminology). Use the page-down key to move
   ahead.

  Searching Human Age Groups

To search for records by population age range, you can use the age
group field (AG). Find your final set, then AND the appropriate age
group. Below are the broad age groups that can be searched in this
   field:

     _________________________________________________________________

AG=CHILD:          Birth through 12 years
AG=ADOLESCENT:     Ages 13 through 17
AG=ADULT:          Age 18 and over
AG=ELDERLY:        Age 65 and over

     _________________________________________________________________

To specify narrower age groups, use descriptors instead of the AG
   field (e.g., INFANTS- IN DE).

Searching for Authors

Since author names are entered as they appear in the source document,
use the INDEX (F5) to see name variations. Type the last name, a
   hyphen, then the first initial:

PsycLIT Search Hints

     * Use PsycLIT's help features.
     * Use the print or on-disc Thesaurus to find descriptors to
represent each concept in your search.
     * If you retrieve too many records, consider adding another search
concept. If all the records appear relevant but there are simply
too many, consider restricting to recent publication years or
English-language articles only (see Quick Reference Guide on back
       cover).
     * If you retrieve too few records, consider dropping a concept,
adding synonyms, or eliminating field specifications.
     * Use the age group field (AG) to identify broad human population
       age groups--for example, AG=ELDERLY.
     * When using the PsycLIT Book Chapters and Books database, take
