This is the start of a collection of materials relevant to the value of a University education. I eventually hope to put a lot of statistical evidence related to the educational and economic benefits of University, and in particular of a Liberal Arts University education. Much of the evidence is necessarily nonexperimental in nature and caution is therefore necessary in drawing causal conclusions from the results.
Participation Rates in Training A central theme in the "Knowledge Economy" is the need for people to continually update and modify their skills and knowledge. People's participation rate in continuing education and training is one indicator of the motivation and capacity for such upgrading. The following results indicate that University students are more likely than those with less education to participate in ongoing educational programs following graduation. Participation Education Rate Level 5.9 0-8 Years 13.5 Some secondary education 21.5 High school graduation 35.9 Some postsecondary education 32.7 Postsecondary certificate or diploma 41.2 University degree Statistics Canada #81-003-XPB, 1997, Vol. 4, no. 1, p. 20
